Paul Ince's first-half booking meant that he missed the quarter-final match at Euro 96, which coincidentally was against Spain.
David Platt, a hero of England's run to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, came back into the team as Ince's replacement and scored one of the penalties that helped Terry Venables' side beat Spain after the last-eight tie ended 0-0 after extra time.

There's been a LOT of chat about penalties this week. Here's an absolute belter from Alan Shearer.
"There's an expression of disbelief from Danny Blind" says legendary BBC commentator Barry Davies on the Dutch defender giving away the spot-kick.
Maybe he was stunned by Paul Ince's wonderful touch and tumble - almost balletic. Watch it again here.

Scotland were left relying on England to stand any chance of progressing.
If England got the win thenScotland could have had the chance to reach the knockout stages of a major competition for the first time.
They just needed to beat Switzerland by enough goals to overtakethe Netherlands on goal difference.
